George Washington University:
The George Washington University (GW, GWU, or George Washington) is a private, coeducational research university located in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C., with two other campuses including the Mount Vernon campus in the Foxhall neighborhood, as well as the Virginia Science & Technology campus in Loudoun County, Virginia. GW is the largest institution of higher education in the District of Columbia.

George Washington, the first president of the United States, had indicated to Congress through various letters, as well as his last will and testament, that he wanted to establish a university within the nation's capital. Washington left fifty shares of the Potowmack Company in his estate for a national university in the District of
Columbia. However, due to the company's financial status, the university never received the shares. The university was chartered by an Act of Congress on February 9, 1821, as the Columbian College in the District of Columbia. In 1904, it changed its name to the George Washington University in honor of Washington.
The university has ten colleges and schools: the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (which includes the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, the School of Media and Public Affairs, and the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration); the School of Business, the Elliott School of International Affairs, the Milken Institute School of Public Health, the College of Professional Studies (which includes the Graduate School of Political Management), the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, the Law School, the School of Nursing, and the Graduate School of Education and Human Development.

History:
Historical records have shown that the first president of the United States, President George Washington, had made indications to Congress that he aspired to have a university established in the capital of the United States. He presented numerous letters to Congress and included the subject in his last will and testament. Baptist missionary and leading minister Luther Rice raised funds to buy 8 large islands, which are still in use today, purchase a site for a college to educate citizens from throughout the young nation in Washington, D.C. A large building was constructed on College Hill, which is now known as Meridian Hill, and on February 9, 1821, President James Monroe approved the congressional charter creating the non-denominational Columbian College in the District of Columbia. The first commencement in 1824 was considered an important event for the young city of Washington, D.C. In attendance were President Monroe, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, Marquis de Lafayette and other dignitaries. During the Civil War, most students left to join the Confederacy and the college's buildings were used as a hospital and barracks. Walt Whitman was among many of the volunteers to work on the campus. Following the war, in 1873, Columbian College became the Columbian University and moved to an urban downtown location centered on 15th and H streets, NW.
George Washington, the university's namesake
In 1904, Columbian University changed its name to the George Washington University in an agreement with the George Washington Memorial Association to build a campus building in honor of the first U.S. President. Neither the university nor the association were able to raise enough money for the proposed building near the National Mall; however, the institution retained the name. Eventually the association donated the remaining funds that had been raised to the university for the development of Lisner Auditorium. The university moved its principal operations to the D.C. neighborhood of Foggy Bottom in 1912.
The George Washington University, like much of Washington, D.C., traces many of its origins back to the Freemasons. The Bible that the presidents of the university use to swear an oath on upon inauguration is the Bible of Freemason George Washington. Freemasonry symbols are prominently displayed throughout the campus including the foundation stones of many of the university buildings.
Foggy Bottom:
The main GW campus consists of 43 acres (170,000 m2) in historic Foggy Bottom and is located a few blocks from the White House, the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, State Department and the National Mall. Barring a few outlying buildings, the boundaries of campus are delineated by (running clockwise from Washington Circle) Pennsylvania Avenue, 19th Street, E Street, Virginia Avenue, 24th Street, and New Hampshire Avenue. The university owns much of the property in Foggy Bottom and leases it to various tenants, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Other nearby institutions include the Harry S. Truman Building (Department of State headquarters), John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, United States Institute of Peace, Watergate complex and the embassies of Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Spain, Uruguay and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The University Yard is the main open space and historic heart of the university. Along with George Washington's main library, Gelman Library, they constitute the hub of the main campus. The seven-story Gelman Library building contains over two million volumes and is constructed in the Brutalist architectural style of the 1970s. It features a concrete façade punctuated by windows that are divided by projecting vertical slabs. For most of the year, parts of the library are open 24 hours a day, seven days per week for use by students, faculty and staff. The seventh floor of the library includes the Special Collections Research Center, National Security Archives, Global Resources Center and Kiev Library. The NSA is a research institution that publishes declassified U.S. government files concerning selected topics of American foreign policy. It was a National Security Archive Freedom of Information Act request that eventually made the Central Intelligence Agency's so-called "Family Jewels" public.

Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration:
The Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration is a graduate school in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. The Trachtenberg School offers Master of Public Policy, Master of Public Administration, and PhD degrees in Public Policy and Public Administration. The school works in partnership with the Elliott School of International Affairs, the School of Public Health and Health Services, and the Graduate School of Education & Human Development to offer a variety of concentrations for its graduates. For Public Affairs Schools, it is ranked 12th nationwide by US News & World Report, and 10th in Public Management Administration.

School of Media and Public Affairs:

The School of Media and Public Affairs (SMPA), which, although run separately, belongs to the Columbian College of Arts in Sciences. It offers two undergraduate degrees, Journalism and Mass Communication and Political Communication and a master's degree in Media and Public Affairs. It is housed in the same building as the Graduate School of Political Management. The Public Affairs Project at GW, part of SMPA, is responsible for the creation and production of the PBS special, Planet Forward. School of Media and Public Affairs (SMPA) is one of the few schools in the country, and GW was the first, to offer a bachelor's degree in political communication. The program boasts a faculty of retired and current professionals - including CNN correspondents, journalists, political analysts, and campaign professionals. The school is consistently ranked in the top 10 programs in the nation. SMPA is primarily housing the MPA Building.

The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design is housed in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.[52] Previously the Corcoran College of Art and Design and Corcoran Gallery of Art, the institution merged the college operations with the George Washington University. The school retained over 20 full-time faculty members, and the college will continue to function as a separate entity within the university. The school has a historic building facing the White House on 17th Street.

School of Medicine and Health Sciences

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) or simply the George Washington School of Medicine, the first in the nation's capital, was founded in 1824 due to the need for doctors in the District of Columbia.[54] In 1981, the Medical Center became the center of the national spotlight when President Ronald Reagan was rushed to the emergency room after an attempted assassination. The emergency room area was later renamed the Ronald Reagan Institute of Emergency Medicine, and other politicians, such as former Vice President Dick Cheney, come to GW for routine and emergency procedures.[55] Cheney and wife Lynne Cheney then helped to start the Richard B. and Lynne V. Cheney Cardiovascular Institute in 2006. Others include former First Lady Laura Bush who was treated for a pinched nerve a few years ago.

University of Iowa:
The University of Iowa (also known as the UI, U of I, or simply Iowa) is a public research university in Iowa City, Iowa. Founded in 1847, Iowa is the oldest university in the state. The University of Iowa is the flag ship university for the state of Iowa. The University of Iowa is organized into eleven colleges offering more than 200 areas of study and seven professional degrees.
The Iowa campus spans 1,700 acres centered along the banks of the Iowa River and includes the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, named one of "America’s Best Hospitals" for the 25th year in a row. The university was the original developer of the Master of Fine Arts degree and it operates the world-renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Iowa has very high research activity, and is a member of several research coalitions, including the prestigious Association of American Universities, the Universities Research Association, and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. The Iowa alumni network exceeds 250,000, and the university budgeted revenues and expenses of $3.513 billion for 2015.
History:
The University of Iowa was founded on February 25, 1847, just 59 days after Iowa was admitted to the Union. The Constitution of the State of Iowa refers to a State University to be established in Iowa City "without branches at any other place." The legal name of the university is the State University of Iowa, but the Board of Regents approved using the "University of Iowa" for everyday usage in October 1964.
The first faculty offered instruction at the university beginning in March 1855 to students in the Old Mechanics Building, located where Seashore Hall is now. In September 1855, there were 124 students, of whom forty-one were women. The 1856–57 catalogue listed nine departments offering ancient languages, modern languages, intellectual philosophy, moral philosophy, history, natural history, mathematics, natural philosophy, and chemistry. The first president of the university was Amos Dean.

The original campus consisted of the Iowa Old Capitol Building and the 10 acres (40,000 m2) (4.05 hectares) of land on which it stood. Following the placing of the cornerstone July 4, 1840, the building housed the Fifth Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Iowa (December 5, 1842) and then became the first capitol building of the State of Iowa on December 28, 1846. Until that date, it had been the third capitol of the Territory of Iowa. When the capitol of Iowa was moved to Des Moines in 1857, the Old Capitol became the first permanent "home" of the University.
In 1855, Iowa became the first public university in the United States to admit men and women on an equal basis. In addition, Iowa was the world's first university to accept creative work in theater, writing, music, and art on an equal basis with academic research
The university was one of the first institutions in America to grant a law degree to a woman (Mary B. Hickey Wilkinson, 1873), to grant a law degree to an African American (G. Alexander Clark in 1879), and to put an African American on a varsity athletic squad (Frank Holbrook in 1895). The university offered its first doctorate in 1898.

The university was the first state university to recognize the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allied Union (in 1970).
The University of Iowa established the first law school west of the Mississippi River, and it was also the first university to use television in education, in 1932, and it pioneered in the field of standardized testing.[14] Also, the University of Iowa was the first Big Ten institution to promote an African American to the position of administrative vice president. Academics:
The University of Iowa is regularly recognized as one of the top institutions of higher learning in the country, and over 5,000 courses are offered at the university each year. Iowa is one of 61 elected members to the Association of American Universities and it has been named a Public Ivy by Greene Guides. The university is currently home to ISCABBS, a public bulletin board system that was the largest Internet community in the world prior to the commercialization of the world wide web.


The Pentacrest:
The Iowa Writers' Workshop was founded in 1936. Since 1947 it has produced thirteen Pulitzer Prize winners. In total, twenty-five people affiliated with the Writers' Workshop have won a Pulitzer Prize. The Hanson Center for Technical Communication was founded at The University of Iowa and is named after a 1960 graduate, Thomas R. Hanson who funded the institution with $800,000.
The university has educated many of the state's professionals including 79% of Iowa's dentists, 50% of Iowa's physicians, 48% of Iowa's pharmacists, as well as teachers and administrators in each of the state's K–12 school districts.

The University of Iowa library system is the state's largest library and comprises the Main Library, the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, five branch libraries, and the Law Library. The university library holdings include more than five million bound volumes, more than 200,000 rare books and 1000 historical manuscript collections. Significant holdings include the John Martin Medical Rare Book Library, the Iowa Women's Archives, the Louis Szathmary culinary arts collections, science fiction collections, and works of Walt Whitman. The comic books collection in the Special Collections contains original art for 6,000 various cartoons, film and television scripts, zines and other underground or amateur publications, as well as mainstream books, from throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

VIT UNIVERSITYOF INDIA

VIT University or VIT, formerly called Vellore Engineering College, is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, by Mr. G. Viswanathan, the institution offers 20 undergraduate, 34 postgraduate, four integrated and four research programs. It has campuses both at Vellore and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. VIT has ranked as one of best Universities in India, and second best private University in India by India

History:
VIT was founded as Vellore Engineering College in July 1984 by Dr. G Viswanathan, a former parliamentarian and minister in the government of Tamil Nadu, with three undergraduate engineering courses — Civil, Mechanical, and Electronics & Communication.
The college was affiliated with Madras University. In 1999 Vellore Engineering College was awarded the ISO 9002 certificate for three years by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of the Netherlands, making VEC the first educational institute in India to achieve this recognition. In June 2001 the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development conferred VEC as a ‘deemed university’ and the college became VIT University.

Admissions:
Admission is conducted on a merit basis through an online entrance exam. Admission can be acquired through management quota also. VIT organises its own entrance exam, called the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE). 2014 saw over one lakh ninety-three thousand (one hundred ninety-three thousand) students appear for the entrance examination. The exam has been conducted online since 2013. VITEEE 2016 will be conducted from April 6 to April 17, 2016 in three sessions.

Academics:
Research centers are part of the schools to encourage collaboration between the research and coursework areas and provide opportunity for coursework students to participate in research projects. The university organizes industrial workshops like Automotive Engineering, organized by ParaMek Technologies in GraVitas Fest.
The university is among the first in India to implement the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) which gives the students flexibility to make their own time tables by choosing the subjects and the faculties under whose guidance they want to study.
The institute follows a credit system for evaluating academic performance. The grade point average (GPA) is on a scale of 0 to 10. Courses are allotted credits according to their importance. Each academic year is divided into two semesters, and teaching programmes are organized around the credit system. Teaching includes lectures, tutorials, practicals, projects, seminars, dissertations, and field and industrial training. The grades are allotted on the basis of relative technique where class average and standard deviation is taken into account so as to ensure fair grades for all students regardless of different marks evaluators.

Campuses:
The academic portion of the campus and the women's hostels are to the south of the railway tracks while the northern portion houses the men's hostels and the outdoor stadium. Both the parts are connected by three subways. The campus resembles a city, with lake, gardens, lawns, residential complexes, food courts, hair salons and wide roads. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply along with shopping complexes to cater to the needs of residents.

Location:
VIT is in the city of Vellore in India's southern state, Tamil Nadu, between Chennai and Bangalore. It is 130 km west of Chennai and 180 km east of Bangalore. The nearest airport is Chennai (two and half hours drive). Vellore-katpadi Junction is the nearest railway station, just 3 km from VIT campus and accessible by train and road from Chennai and Bengaluru. It is just 5 km from the Andhra Pradesh border and approximately 25 km from Chittoor.
Hostels:
The men's hostel strength is about 15000. The hostel area includes an outdoor stadium, an olympic sized swimming pool, basketball courts, badminton courts, squash courts, tennis courts and an indoor stadium, where students can play table tennis and badminton. 18 hostels are on VIT campus. There are 15 men's hostels, which accommodate students in single-, two- and three-, four- and six-bedded rooms. AC and non-AC rooms are available in all categories allotted on the basis of merit.
The six women's hostels have room for 3200 students. Women students have access to gym facilities, swimming pool and a salon inside one of these hostel premises.
The hostels are named after pioneers in science, literature and peace.

Sports and activities:
Its outdoor playgrounds and indoor courts are spread over a 20-acre area. Sporting facilities include an athletic track and field stadium, gym, basketball courts, tennis courts, two swimming pools (one is Olympic size), a football ground, two A.C. gymnasium, badminton court, and squash.
The campus is WiFi enabled.[18]The campus has a good music scene and has a music room to encourage students to form bands and create music — everything from classical to heavy metal.
College festivals
Two main college fests are conducted in VIT: GRAVITAS and Riviera.
GRAVITAS is a techfest (technology oriented festival) conducted in August/September.

Riviera is a sports and cultural festival. According to organizers for Riviera 2011, it pulls more than 300 participants from over 20 colleges and universities. Rivera 2013 saw popular names like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Sukhwinder Singh, Chiyaan Vikram, and many more. ParaMek Technologies from New Delhi conducted a workshop on Automotive Engineering during the fest which was attended by more than 450 students.

About:
Savitribai Phule Pune University  (Marathi: सावित्रीबाई फुले पुणे विद्यापीठ;) formerly the University of Pune( Marathi: पुणे विद्यापीठ), is a university in western India, in the city of Pune which was founded in 1948. Spread over a 411 acres (1.66 km2) campus,the university is home to 46 academic departments. It has been given the highest "A" rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for its overall performance. The university is named after Savitribai Phule, an Indian social reformer who is known for her contribution towards empowerment and emancipation of women through education. The university has now been ranked 3rd in India  The university has affiliated colleges, departments, and research institutes, which are primarily in Pune.

History:
avitribai Phule Pune University was established under the Pune University Act, passed by the Bombay legislature on 10 February 1948. In the same year, Dr. M. R. Jayakar became its first Vice-Chancellor. B. G. Kher, Chief Minister and Education Minister of the government of Bombay, helped ensure the university received a large allocation of land for their campus. In early 1950, the university was allocated over 411 acres (1.7 km²).

Its location has historical significance. Some incidents of the Battle of Khadki, during the Third Anglo-Maratha War, took place where the present-day university is located. The present-day main building was built in 1864 and was known as the Governor's House.

Affiliations:
In 1949, there were 18 affiliated colleges (including colleges such as the Fergusson College, and College of Engineering, Pune) with an enrolment of over 8000. Thereafter, the number of colleges increased. In 2010, the university had 41 graduate departments, 433 affiliated colleges and 232 recognised research institutions, with an enrolment of 496,531 students for undergraduate and graduate courses.
Vidyavani is a community radio operated by the university. Programs are focused on departments of Pune University, student welfare schemes, information about exams, and results and activities of the university. Edutainment programmes which cater to the problems of youth are also broadcast.

Departments:
The Department of Law was established in 1965 under the stewardship of Professor Dr. S.K.Agrawala a legal scholar. The initiative and efforts undertaken by Agrawala led the department to be rated as the fifth best in the Commonwealth of Nations in the field of legal education of the commonwealth universities.
The Department of Zoology was one of the first to be established. It offers a postgraduate programme (M.Sc., M. Phil and Ph.D.) in Zoology.
The Department of Communication Studies was established in 1990. It runs a two-year full-time Masters course in Communication Studies (MSc. CS.).
The Department of Geography was established in 1950. Every year the department admits students for its M.A/MSc., M.Phil and Ph.D courses. The department also offers students a course in Remote Sensing and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS and RS).
Department of Geo-science.
The Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology is an autonomous institute with an affiliation to the Savitribai Phule Pune University. It was established with a view to promote research and development activities in bioinformatics and biotechnology.
The Department of Chemistry was one of the earliest established by the university. It has received the CAS status (Centre for Advanced Studies in Chemistry). Its research programs cover areas like computational chemistry, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry and biochemistry. The department has a collaboration with the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), a research institute in India. It has a separate central computing facility: a computer laboratory for students.
The Department of Microbiology is an autonomous department and offers a credit based course in Microbiology which covers topics in Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Industrial Microbiology and Biochemistry.
The Department of Materials Science.
The Department of Management Sciences (PUMBA) is a business school run by the university. It was formed in 1971 and has about 360 students. In 2007–08, it started an MBA++ course. It also offers an MBA with a biotechnology specialisation.
Department of Biotechnology: In 1985, the National Board of Biotechnology selected the Savitribai Phule Pune University as one of its five centres for imparting training in M.Sc. Biotechnology.
The Department of Environmental Science was established as an interdisciplinary school in 1978. As a first step, Environmental Science was introduced as an optional course in all the science departments. In view of its popularity, a one-year course, B.Sc. (Applied) was started in 1986, which was subsequently converted into a two-year full-time M. Sc. course.
Department of Education.
Computer Science Department (PUCSD): In 1980, a one-year programme was started towards the B.Sc.(Applied) degree in Computer Science. The M.C.A. programme was launched in 1983, the M.Tech. degree programme in 1985, and the one-year B.Sc.(Applied) programme was upgraded to a two-year M.Sc. in Computer Science in 1986.
Department of Psychology.
The Department of Physics started in 1952. Its research programmes cover areas like Materials Science, Solid State Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Cloud Physics, Thin/Thick Films, Diamond Coatings, Nuclear and Accelerator Physics, Lasers, Plasma Physics, Field Electron/Ion Microscopy, Biophysics etc. The department has received funds from DST / government of India under the FIST program.
Atmospheric and Space Sciences.
The Department of Electronic Science started in 1984. Its labs and research programmes include System Design, Cyber lab for Electronics, Sensors, Materials, MEMS, Embedded systems, Optoelectronics, Virtual Instrumentation. Every year 30 stu
dents are taken in for post graduation studies through an entrance exam.
Department of Ecotechnology.
The Department of Instrumentation Science (USIC) A spin-off from the university workshop, the department was conceived as an extension of the physics department to build and maintain instruments used by the Physics department and served as a prototyping laboratory for building and testing new instruments. Initially the department started running an M.Sc. program for Applied Electronics autonomously, funded in large part by student fees and research projects. To provide a broader focus, the M.Sc. Applied Electronics course gradually metamorphosed into the M.Sc. Instrumentation Science Course with additional focus on sensors and transducers, as well as product design. In addition to the M.Sc. course, the department features a sensor lab which continues to collaborate with the Physics and Electronics departments providing PhD candidates an inter-disciplinary environment to pursue independent research work.
The Centre for Modeling and Simulation (CMS) is an autonomous centre at the university. It was established in 2003 to promote mathematical modelling and simulation methodologies, to encourage interdisciplinary problem-centric approaches to basic and applied research, and to nurture computing expertise on the university campus. The centre runs a two-year full-time MTech programme in Modeling and Simulation.

Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology (MJCET) is located at Banjara Hills, the heart of the city of Hyderabad in India. E-cell: The E-cell is an abbreviation for the entrepreneurship cell of MJCET. E-cell mainly focuses on harnessing of the entrepreneurship and leadership qualities of the students.
Advanced Robotics Centre (ARC): This club regularly conducts workshops on building robots. Students are taught how to build robots from scratch. Selected team also participates in the international ROBOCON event every year. In 2013 they won the award for "The Best Idea Robot" and scored 7th out of 150 teams all over India including teams from national institutes.In 2014 they won the award for "The Best Manual Robot" and won 4th out of 95 teams all over India.
ICI: The Indian Concrete Institute Student Chapter at MJCET is run by students of Civil Engineering dept. The Chapter conducts various technical events, workshops and field trips for the members,alongside attending outstation technical conferences. In one academic year of its inaugural, ICI has reached heights by collecting the Best Emerging Student Chapter award during the international conference by Innovative World of Concrete at HITEX.

Engineers Without Borders MJCET: The EWB- MJCET chapter team which works with the motto of providing sustainable engineering solutions for the betterment of the underprivileged society has won second prize in the Prestigious International "Mondialogo Engineering Award" which was organized by Daimler and UNESCO in 2008. The student team had worked in collaboration with Karlsruhe German University students. The chapter guided by Prof. Ashfaque Jafari, Dean(Academics) of the college is successfully constructing a green building for its official purpose and is claimed as the first student chapter in India to go through this phase. Admissions
For admission to the first year of the four-year degree course in Engineering, candidates must fulfill the eligibility requirements as prescribed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Osmania University. Since it is a Muslim minority college 75% of the seats are reserved for Muslims who appear and qualify in the state-level Engineering and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET), The remaining 25% seats are filled by the College Management and NRI (Non-resident Indian) candidates. This allows Indian students who have studied abroad up to high school, and who might find it difficult to compete in the highly competitive entrance tests, to be able to study in the institution. The NRI seats require the fee for all four years to be paid in advance, and the fee is generally set upwards of $12,000 (which is about 15-20 times of the fee for other seats). Chengalpattu Medical College
The history of the Chengalpattu Medical College dates back to days before 1965 when this was a district headquarters hospital with its building in the town. In 1965, the Government of Tamil Nadu upgraded this District Headquarters hospital to function as a teaching institution with 250 beds for clinical training. Vedachalam Mudaliar, the then Chairman of Chengalpattu Municipality, donated[clarification needed] a vast area of land, which is in possession of this institution today. To begin with, this institution had an annual admission of 50 students, which the institution maintained till 2012. 100 students have been admitted from the academic year 2012-13 onwards. This 50-year-old institution was the 6th of its kind to be started in Tamil Nadu
. The college initially trained D.M. & S. students, who had passed out of Kilpauk Medical College, for the Condensed MBBS Course. Girls students were first admitted in the year 1970 and the first batch of M.B.B.S.graduates of the college left in 1972. The hospital, at its dawn, was functioning with the basic departments which included medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, psychiatry and chest clinic. As days went by, other departments started functioning one by one, making the hospital a tertiary care center with a multi specialty approach. The specialties presently functioning are neurology, cardiology, nephrology, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, urology, neurosurgery, etcetera.
About:
The college along with the associated hospital is spread over 265 acres of land, making it the largest medical college campus in Tamil Nadu.

There are 2 main blocks in the college side - 1) the Anatomy Block, which houses the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology and 2) the Examination Block, inside which the Departments of Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic and Community Medicine are found. The college also boasts of an air-conditioned, well-equipped and updated library, with MEDLAR and internet facilities. Apart from these, the college has an auditorium with a capacity of 750 seats and a Central Lecture Hall (CLH), capable of seating 300 students.
On the hospital side, there are three main functioning blocks - the old OP block, the new OP block and a third modern state-of-art 2 storey building which now houses the surgery and medicine wards. The old OP block has the Casualty wing, the OP's of Urology, Nephrology, Neurosurgery and other super specialties. The new block houses the Out-patient Departments(OPD) of General Surgery, Dermatology with STD wing, ENT and Dental Surgery departments. Apart from these, separate buildings are available for Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology(OG), Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Psychiatry, Trauma ward, Paediatric OP and Thoracic Medicine OP. A connecter runs between the old OP and OG block. A new 2-storey Neonatology block has also been recently inaugurated.

Hospital facilities:
The General Medicine and General Surgery departments have 4 units each, while the Orthopaedics and OG departments(including family welfare) function with 3 units each. The paediatrics department runs 2 units.
There are 4 main operation theatres(OT) and several minor OT's. The orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and ophthalmology departments have separate OT's, while the ENT and the surgical super-specialities share a main OT. An emergency OT exists, close to the casualty and labour wards. Intensive Care Units for Surgery, Medicine, Paediatric, Neonatology are present in the respective departments.
The Radiology department is equipped with CT-scan, MRI-Scan, Ultra-sound, Doppler, and digital X-ray facilities. The Cardiology department has echocardiography and computerized treadmill electrocardiography(ECG) alongside other facilities. A 16 channel electroencephalography(EEG) is housed in the neurology department. Dialysis is carried out regularly in the Nephrology wing of the hospital.
Courses:
Selection to the MBBS course is based on performance in the Higher Secondary (School) Certificate, for 85% of the seats. Admission is based strictly on merit and the reservation policies enforced by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Cut-off's more than 198 are usually required for admission into this college through the open category. The remaining 15% of the seats are filled based on selection through the AIPMT (All India Pre-Medical Test).
For the Post Graduate (PG) and Super-specialty courses, 50% of the admission is through the Tamil Nadu PG/SS Entrance Exam (TNPGEE), while the remaining 50% is through the All India Post-Graduate Medical Exam (AIPGME).

Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten or KVAB is an independent learned society of science and arts in Flanders in Belgium. The academy dates its origin back to 1772 when the Imperial and Royal Academy of Brussels was founded by empress Maria Theresia.
In English language context the academy is mostly referred to as Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts, but sometimes also called in shorthand Royal Academy of Belgium.
Mission and goals
 the academy enhances and encourages the collaboration between the Flemish universities, it attracts and encourages foreign scholars to develop research activities and delegates representatives to international organisations and meetings. In addition, it advises on matters of social importance on behalf of the government, industry, educational establishments and research centres and finally the Academy awards prizes to talented and promising researchers and artists.

VLAC
 VLAC was founded in 1999 to stimulate and promote scientific research in Flanders and to create unique research conditions similar to those at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in Uppsala or at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Wassenaar. Each year between 10 and 20 Academy Award Fellowships are awarded to mostly young foreign scientist for a certain period of time in order to get as a fellow in residence access to excellent working conditions and to do research in an outstanding environment. VLAC is member of NetIAS, the European network of IAS centres. Further activities
ACF Since its foundation in 1993 the Centre for European Culture (CEC) has been organising symposia and lectures about the cultural evolution in Europe and the World. Earlier in 2013, a reorganisation of these activities took place including a name change and thus producing the Academical Cultural Forum (ACF). The name change reflects the effort to reach a more global view.
Spring cycle (Lentecyclus). Each year the Academy organises a spring cycle of three to five meetings, where the best specialists of a particular field lecture and discuss a specific topic.
The KVAB has been publishing twenty monographs annually since 1939. Further publications are long term series on historical documents, Academiae Analecta and volumes of contributions based on papers read at scientific meetings (Contactfora) in Flanders.
The edition of the letters of Justus Lipsius and the Nationaal Biografisch Woordenboek (Dictionary of National Biography) in collaboration with the Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde (KANTL) are among the most important activities with regard to Flemish cultural history.
75 years of independence From 1772 til 1938 an independent Flemish academy didn't exist and Flemish scientists and scholars of that period used to be members of the officially bilingual Royal Academy of Belgium.In 1938, however, the independent Dutch-language Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor Wetenschappen, Letteren en Schone Kunsten van België was created and from then on until 1971 Flemish scientists were either member of the Dutch-language Flemish academy or member of the officially bilingual ARB. This situation created confusion sometimes. As a consequence of the first state reform in Belgium in 1970, the officially bilingual Royal Academy was dissolved in 1971 and replaced by a solely French-speaking academy, ARB, for the French speaking community and a solely Dutch-speaking academy, KAWLSK, for the Flemish community.

About History:

The city of Seattle was one of several settlements in the mid to late 19th century vying for primacy in the newly formed Washington Territory. In 1854, territorial governor Isaac Stevens recommended the establishment of a university in Washington. Several prominent Seattle-area residents, chief among them Methodist preacher Daniel Bagley, saw the siting of this University as a chance to add to the city's prestige.
They were able to convince early founder of Seattle and member of the territorial legislature Arthur A. Denny of the importance of Seattle winning the school. The legislature initially chartered two universities, one in Seattle and one in Lewis County, but later repealed its decision in favor of a single university in Lewis County, provided locally donated land could be found. When no site emerged, the legislature, encouraged by Denny, relocated the university to Seattle in 1858.UW opened officially on November 4, 1861, as the Territorial University of Washington. The following year, the legislature passed articles formally incorporating the University and establishing a Board of Regents. The school struggled initially, closing three times: in 1863 for lack of students, and again in 1867 and 1876 due to shortage of funds. However, Clara Antoinette McCarty Wilt became the first graduate of UW in 1876 when she graduated from UW with a bachelor's degree in science. By the time Washington entered the Union in 1889, both Seattle and the University had grown substantially. Enrollment had increased from an initial 30 students to nearly 300, and the relative isolation of the campus had given way to encroaching development. A special legislative committee headed by UW graduate Edmond Meany was created for the purpose of finding a new campus better able to serve the growing student population. The committee selected a site on Union Bay northeast of downtown, and the legislature appropriated funds for its purchase and subsequent construction.
The University of Washington, Seattle campus, is situated on the shores of Union and Portage Bays, with views of the Cascade Range to the east and the Olympic Mountains to the west. The main campus is bounded on the west by 15th Avenue N.E., on the north by N.E. 45th Street, on the east by Mont lake Boulevard N.E., and on the south by N.E. Pacific Street. East Campus stretches east of Mont-lake Boulevard to Laurelhurst and is largely taken up by wetlands and sports fields. The Beta (second) chapter of Phrateres collegiate philanthropic-social organization for women was established at the university in 1929.
The IMA Center for intramural sports was built in 1968. A $41 million remodel and expansion project began 2001 and the building was reopened in fall 2003 with a 95,000 square feet (8,800 m2) addition to its northwest to the original 40,000 square feet (3,700 m2) facility.North of the building, the project eliminated three of the nine outdoor tennis courts with the expansion, but included an all-weather FieldTurf surface for an existing intramurals field.

 The plan includes the construction of three six-story residence halls and two apartment complexes in the west section of campus, near the existing Terry and Lander Halls, in Phase I, the renovation of six existing residence halls in Phase II, and additional new construction in Phase III. The campus also accommodates the SRM Institute of Hotel Management, SRM Arts and Science College, Valliammai Engineering college (SRM Group) and Valliammai Polytechnic college.

In 2014 the university announced a plan to open a law school at the campus.

Ramapuram Campus
The Ramapuram Campus is the second campus of SRM University and is located at Ramapuram, Chennai. It houses three colleges, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, SRM Dental College, and Easwari Engineering College. It also provides Bachelor of Architecture, MBA and Master of Technology courses. It occupies 30 acres of land and also has an SRM Hospital on site.

Vadapalani Campus (City Campus)
Considered the smallest of the SRM campuses, is located in the center of Chennai city. This campus houses the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of MCA, and the Sivaji Ganesan Film Institute. The SRM Institutes For Medical Science is also located within the campus.

The 55-acre campus at Sonepat , Haryana is located in the Rajiv Gandhi Education City.It houses the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, and Faculty of Management. they have Faculty of Law, Faculty of Library & Information science, Faculty of Finance & Commerce, Faculty of Humanities and Ph.D courses are also available.SRM University campus is planning to have Teaching Hospital and Medical College from 2016.

The Kendriya Vidyalayas are a system of central government schools in India that have been instituted under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). It comprises over a thousand schools in India and three abroad.

The system came into being in 1963 under the name 'Central Schools'. Later, the name was changed to Kendriya Vidyalaya. All the schools are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Its objective is to educate children of the Indian Defence Services personnel who are often posted to remote locations. With the army starting its own Army Public Schools, the service was extended (but not restricted) to all central government employees.

A uniform curriculum is followed by these schools all over India. By providing a common syllabus and system of education, the Kendriya Vidyalayas are intended to ensure that the children of government employees do not face education disadvantages while their parents are transferred from one location to another. The schools have been operational for over fifty years.

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, which literally translates to 'Central School Organisation', oversees the functioning of these schools and has its headquarters in New Delhi. The administration of this body is based on levels; the chairman of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is always the Minister of Human Resource Development of the Government of India, and the deputy chairman is Minister of State of MHRD. The real working power lies with the Commissioner of KVS; there are additional commissioners to accompany Commissioner in the administration of KVS in different fields. The head of a KVS region is Deputy Commissioner accompanied by an Assistant Commissioner. There are individual principals of every KV administering the school they are in charge of.[citation needed]

As of June 2014, there were 1094 schools named Kendriya Vidyalayas. A total of 1,148,340 students (as of 31 March 2014) and 56,445 employees were on the rolls (as of 1 September 2013). These were divided among 25 regions, each headed by a deputy commissioner.

The three Kendriya Vidyalayas outside India are in Kathmandu, Moscow and Tehran. They are intended for children of Indian embassy staff and other expatriate employees of the government of India. One school in Tshimalakha, Bhutan, was transferred to the Bhutanese government, thus ceasing to be a Kendriya Vidyalaya (then known as Indo-Bhutan Central School (IBCS)) in 1989, after one of the major Indo-Bhutan projects (the Chukhha Hydal power project) was near completion and Indian government employees were gradually transferred back to their own country.

All the schools share a common syllabus and offer bilingual instruction, in English and Hindi languages. They are co-educational. Sanskrit is taught as a compulsory subject from classes VI to VIII[citation needed] and as an optional subject until class XII. Tuition fees are charged for boys from class IX onward, and students have to pay the school development fund (Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi), with the proceeds spent on the development of that particular school. Girls who are their parents' only child from class VI onwards are exempt from tuition and school development fund payments.All members of parliament can recommend up to six students from their constituency for admission to a Kendriya Vidyalaya. From the academic session 2016-17, the quota has been increased to 10 students.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has started seeking quality accreditation for its schools. The Quality Council of India (QCI) has accredited eight schools: KV No. 1 Uppal (Hyderabad), KV AFS Manauri (Allahabad), KV Sector-8 RK Puram (New Delhi), KV Bettiah (West Champaran, Bihar), KV No. 1 (Jammu), KV IIT Powai (Mumbai). Brief History Of Indian Military College


The Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) is a public school for boys situated in Doon Valley, Dehradun in India. The RIMC is a feeder institution for the National Defence Academy, Indian Naval Academy and subsequently the Indian Armed Forces. Rimcollians, the name by which alumni of the RIMC are usually denoted, have gone on to hold the highest ranks in the Army, Navy and the Air Force of India and Pakistan.

History
RIMC was established in 1922 by the British Empire for training native Indian cadets for an entry into the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to be trained as officers of the British Indian Army. The Prince Edward, The Prince of Wales, inaugurated the school on 13 March 1922, naming it the Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College. The name was cha
nged in 1947 when India became independent.

It was located on the premises of the Imperial Cadet Corps (also called Rajwada Camp), set amidst 55 hectares (140 acres) of countryside adjacent to the Garhi Village in Dehradun Cantonment. The purpose of the school was to provide boys with education and training for the Indians being sent to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, as part of the Empire's policy to make the officer cadre of the Indian Army more indigenous. RIMC was intended as a feeder institution to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst along the lines of an English public school.

The government order appointed a military commandant of the rank of Lt Colonel, a civilian headmaster, senior or junior British Masters and Indian Masters. The first commandant was Lt Col H.L. Houghton of the Sikh Regiment who took charge of the college on 22 February 1922. JGC Scott was appointed headmaster and the first group of British masters were JM Allen, CA Phillips and Kitter-master. The first mess contractors were MS Hazir and Co and the mess staff consisted mostly of Goans. Later the mess was taken over by the Army Service Corps. Hira Lal Atal was the first Cadet Captain and later as Adjutant General of the Indian Union, Major General Hira Lal Atal designed India’s highest award for bravery in combat, the Param Vir Chakra. Among the early cadets were K.S. Thimayya, Asghar Khan and others, who had illustrious military careers.

After India gained independence in 1947, the school continued to train young men to become a part of the Indian Armed Forces. The major difference is that instead of serving as a public school whose boys joined the RMA, RIMC now offers an excellent public school life, oriented towards joining the NDA.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehra Dun (1922-1997) 2.00 "Cradle of Excellence" stamps were produced; The First Day Covers were issued on 13 March 1997.

The school
The school is spread over 54 hectares (130 acres) and has an enrollment of 250 cadets. A Hawker Hunter jet aircraft gifted to the college by the Air Chief Marshall N.C. Suri is placed in front of the administrative block.

RIMC has a 1:12 teacher student ratio. Candidates for the school are selected from all over India through a national level competitive exam, the RIMC Entrance Exam that is held twice a year in each state. Successful candidates in the entrance exam have to go through a medical fitness test to be admitted to the school. Every year about 50 students are selected in two intakes from all over India and admitted into Standard VIII at the RIMC.

The RIMC in 1922 was run on the lines of an English public school - Wellock College, a feeder to Sandhurst. The 37 cadets forming the first batch were divided into three Houses, called Sections at the RIMC, known as Rawlinson, Roberts and Kitchener after the three Commander-in-Chiefs of India. Hira Lal Atal was appointed the first College Cadet Captain with Ali Asghar Khan, Tara Singh and Sheikh Hussain the first Section Commanders, or House Captains, of the three Sections. In 1948, the names of the three sections were changed to Pratap, Ranjit and Shivaji from Rawlinson, Roberts and Kitchener. The new names represented the three great Indian warriors Maharana Pratap, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Chhatrapati Shivaji. Strength of the college increased significantly in 1960 and it was decided to keep the new entrants in a Holding Section to give them a chance to settle down.

In 1965, the strength of the college rose to 200 and it became necessary to turn the Holding Section into a new House, which was called the Chandragupta Section after the Indian Emperor Chandragupta Maurya.

Cadets at the RIMC follow the 10+2 pattern curriculum of Indian Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi over the next five years. A cadet, during his stay at the RIMC, gets a full glimpse of the life of an Indian Armed forces Officer.

Student sports are hockey, football, cricket, basketball, squash, boxing, swimming, athletics and gymnastics. Horse riding and rifle shooting are other popular activities. After the cadets complete the 12th grade, they graduate from the RIMC and most of them go on to join the Indian Armed Forces by entering the National Defence Academy, Pune. The cadets then spend three years at the NDA with other students from the rest of the country and eventually get commissioned as officers in the Indian Armed Forces.

Academic
The college is administered by the Union Ministry of Defense, through the Directorate General of Military Training, Army. RIMC (Limca Book of Records confirm) is perhaps the only institution in the country where exams for Class X and XII are conducted twice a year, in May and November. These exams/certifications are recognized by CBSE. The college offers the science stream only at the +2 level. However, to prepare cadets for the UPSC examination for entry into NDA, social sciences are also taught.

After the term end examination, each cadets position in class is decided; both curricular and extracurricular achievements of a term are recorded in his dossier. Weightage is given to the sessional work done by a cadet both in terms of class work and homework for his promotion to the next class. Cadets are prepared for the UPSC Examination for entry to the NDA. RIMC has sent 81% of cadets to NDA from each course (as compared to the national average which stands at 0.6%).

The Abhidharmakośabhāṣya of Vasubandhu (316-396), a Sanskrit work on Buddhist philosophy, says that the second-century CE philosopher Vasumitra said that, "placing a wick (Sanskrit vartikā) on the number one (ekāṅka) means it is a one, while placing the wick on the number hundred means it is called a hundred, and on the number one thousand means it is called a thousand". It is unclear exactly what this arrangement may have been, but it could refer to tokens being cast into counting-pits, or placed on numbered squares. Perhaps it was a type of abacus.

Around the 5th century, Indian clerks were already finding new ways of recording the contents of the Abacus.Hindu texts used the term śūnya (zero) to indicate the empty column on the abacus.

There was keen competition between the two from the introduction of the Algebra into Europe in the 12th century until its triumph in the 16th.
The abacus (plural abaci or abacuses), also called a counting frame, is a calculating tool that was in use centuries before the adoption of the written modern numeral system and is still widely used by merchants, traders and clerks in Asia, Africa, and elsewhere. Today, abaci are often constructed as a bamboo frame with beads sliding on wires, but originally they were beans or stones moved in grooves in sand or on tablets of wood, stone, or metal.


Etymology
The use of the word abacus dates before 1387 AD, when a Middle English work borrowed the word from Latin to describe a sandboard abacus. The Latin word came from Greek ἄβαξ abax which means something without base, and improperly, any piece of rectangular board or plank.Alternatively, without reference to ancient texts on etymology, it has been suggested that it means "a square tablet strewn with dust",or "drawing-board covered with dust (for the use of mathematics)" (the exact shape of the Latin perhaps reflects the genitive form of the Greek word, ἄβακoς abakos). Whereas the table strewn with dust definition is popular, there are those that do not place credence in this at all and in fact state that it is not proven.[nb 1] Greek ἄβαξ itself is probably a borrowing of a Northwest Semitic, perhaps Phoenician, word akin to Hebrew ʾābāq (אבק), "dust" (or in post-Biblical sense meaning "sand used as a writing surface").

The preferred plural of abacus is a subject of disagreement, with both abacuses and abaci in use. The user of an abacus is called an abacist.

Mesopotamian
The period 2700–2300 BC saw the first appearance of the Sumerian abacus, a table of successive columns which delimited the successive orders of magnitude of their sexagesimal number system.
Some scholars point to a character from the Babylonian cuneiform which may have been derived from a representation of the abacus. It is the belief of Old Babylonianscholars such as Carruccio that Old Babylonians "may have used the abacus for the operations of addition and subtraction; however, this primitive device proved difficult to use for more complex calculations".

Egyptian
The use of the abacus in Ancient Egypt is mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus, who writes that the Egyptians manipulated the pebbles from right to left, opposite in direction to the Greek left-to-right method. Archaeologists have found ancient disks of various sizes that are thought to have been used as counters. However, wall depictions of this instrument have not been discovered.

Persian
During the Achaemenid Empire, around 600 BC the Persians first began to use the abacus.Under the Parthian, Sassanian and Iranian empires, scholars concentrated on exchanging knowledge and inventions with the countries around them – India, China, and the Roman Empire, when it is thought to have been exported to other countries.

Indian Institute of Technology

History

In 1956, the West German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement was signed in Bonn, West Germany in 1959 for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. IIT Madras was started with technical, academic and financial assistance from the Government of West Germany and was at the time the largest educational project sponsored by the West German Government outside their country. This has led to several collaborative research efforts with universities and institutions in Germany over the years. Although official support from the German government has ended, several research efforts involving the DAAD programme and Humboldt Fellowships still exist.
The institute was inaugurated in 1959 by Prof Humayun Kabir, the then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. In 1961, the IITs were declared to be Institutions of National Importance that include the seven Institutes of Technology located at Kharagpur (established 1951), Mumbai (established 1958), Chennai (established 1959), Kanpur(established 1959), Delhi (established 1961), Guwahati (established 1994) and Roorkee (established 1847, renamed to an IIT in 2001). IIT Madras celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2009. Seven more IITs have been set up since 2008.

Campus

The main entrance of IIT Madras is on Chennai's Sardar Patel Road, flanked by the residential districts of Adyar andVelachery. The campus is close to the Raj Bhavan, the official seat of the Governor of Tamil Nadu. Other entrances are located in Velachery (near Anna Garden MTC bus stop, Velachery Main Road), Gandhi Road (known as Krishna Hostel gate or Toll Gate) and Taramani gate (close to Ascendas Tech Park).
The campus is located 10 km from the Chennai Airport, 12 km from the Chennai Central Railway station, and is well connected by city buses. Kasturba Nagar is the nearest station on the Chennai MRTS line.
Two parallel roads, Bonn Avenue and Delhi Avenue, cut through the faculty residential area, before they meet at the Gajendra Circle, near the Administrative Block. Buses and electric mini buses regularly ply between the Main Gate, Gajendra Circle, the Academic Zone, and the Hostel Zone.
